Magnesium Oxide (MgO) is prized as a refractory material, i.e. a solid that is physically and chemically stable at high temperatures.
Magnesium Oxide or Magnesia, is a white hygroscopic solid mineral that occurs naturally as periclase and is a source of magnesium. It has an empirical formula of MgO and consists of a lattice of Mg2+ ions and O2− ions held together by ionic bonding. Magnesium hydroxide forms in the presence of water (MgO + H2O → Mg(OH)2), but it can be reversed by heating it to remove moisture. It is also hygroscopic so should be protected from water or moisture.
Magnesium Oxide is a white or off white color unscented mineral shaped by the calcination of magnesium carbonate to 900c to 1000c. The raw mineral comes from the mines of Salem, considered to be having the highest quality and purity of magnesite in the country. The plants have facilities to produce about 15,000 MT of Calcined Magnesia (Magnesium oxide). To ensure uniform quality of the product, the production is carried out continuously with automated and precise temperature controls. It has useful attributes: high thermal conductivity and low electrical conductivity and Non-flammable. MgO has an important place as a commercial plant fertilizer and as animal feed. It is a principal fireproofing ingredient in construction materials between many other uses.
